The Saturn V was developed to send astronauts beyond Earth’s orbit and onto the Moon. Standing taller than the Statue of Liberty, Saturn V propelled 24 humans to the Moon from Apollo 8 (1968) through to Apollo 17 (1972). The rocket’s final launch thrust the United States first Space Station, Skylab, into Earth’s orbit.
